What You Drive, What You Pay

There are several ways in which the type of car you drive can affect your insurance premiums, explains Kim Hazelbaker, who is a senior vice president of the Highway Loss Data Institute, a non-profit public service organization that gathers, processes, and publishes a variety of data on the ways insurance losses vary among different kinds of vehicles.

The Highway Loss Data Institute’s database has information on two-thirds of the privately insured vehicles in the US. You can access their information by make and model to get an indication of what cars are the most likely to be involved in theft, collision, and injury to the passengers. These figures can help you pick a car that is both safe to drive and less expensive to insure.

According to Hazelbaker, auto theft is not a big deal in most areas, except in urban and port cities, and those along Mexican border. If you live in one of these locations, it probably pays to avoid cars that are popular with thieves: currently sport utility vehicles, sport cars, and luxury cars. You may try numbers of online insurance quotes in order to compare the rate.

The collision data may be surprising to some drivers. For instance, smaller cars are more likely to be involved in accidents than larger ones. And, as you would expect, passengers riding in larger vehicles sustain fewer injuries than those in smaller ones, indicating that mass adds protection.

According to Hazelbaker, insurance companies are just beginning to look at what kind of damage different vehicles tend to do to other vehicles when involved in a collision. Until now, this aspect of accidents had not been taken into account. But data could increase the cost of insuring sport utility vehicles and other big cars in the future.
