Vitamin B6 for Menstrual Acne

menstrual acneAcne that accompanies menstruation responds well to vitamin B6, or pyridoxine. Back in 1974, B. Leonard Snider, M.D., of Erie, Pennsylvania, told a dermatology meeting that many teenage girls with menstrual acne find their flare-ups are reduced by taking vitamin B6 before and during their periods. Since his report, Dr. Snider says, “We have noticed that numerous other doctors are using it as well.” Although most of his patients take the 50 milligrams he prescribes for 2 to 21/2 weeks in the month, “some do better with it all month,” he says.

More good news for women with acne is that they no longer have to stop using all cosmetics (an approach that may not work anyway). Now there are cosmetics labeled “noncomedogenic,” which work by soaking up sebum and may be better for the skin than no cosmetics at
